Is ceramic coating worth it in New Mexico?

Ceramic coating is probably the most oversold product in this industry. It's also genuinely useful, and New Mexico is one of the better arguments for it. Both of those things are true, so here's the version without the marketing.

What a coating actually is

A liquid that chemically bonds to your clear coat and cures into a hard, slick, semi-permanent layer. Unlike wax, which sits on top and washes away in weeks, a coating is attached and is measured in years.

What it genuinely does

• Makes the car dramatically easier to wash — dirt and water release instead of clinging.
• Adds real gloss and depth on top of properly corrected paint.
• Resists UV oxidation, which is what turns older red and black paint chalky.
• Resists chemical staining from bird droppings, bugs, sap and hard-water minerals.
• Gives you far more time to remove something before it etches the clear coat.

What it does not do

• Stop rock chips. Nothing chemical will — that's paint protection film's job.
• Make paint scratch-proof. Automatic car wash brushes will still mar a coated car.
• Mean you never wash the car again.
• Fix paint that wasn't corrected first. It locks in whatever is underneath it.

Why New Mexico is a strong case

The two things a coating is best at are the two things working hardest on paint here. UV at 5,300 feet under a mostly clear sky is relentless, and Albuquerque's water is hard — let it dry on a hot panel from a sprinkler or a hose and the minerals etch in. A coating buys you time and makes the spots release rather than bond.

Add late-summer monsoon dust settling on wet paint and you have a city that's tough on clear coat all year round.

Why the prep costs more than the coating

This is the part worth understanding before you buy. A coating is optically clear and it seals in whatever is under it. Applied over swirl marks, it makes the swirls permanent and glossy. The polishing stage is where the result actually comes from — the bottle is the easy part, and any shop quoting a coating without discussing correction is quoting you a different product.

So is it worth it?

If the car lives outside, if you keep your cars a long time, or if you simply hate washing — yes, comfortably. If the car is garaged, you're selling it next year, and you're fine with a wax twice a year, it's a harder argument and we'll say so.
